Per statute, the State Land Commissioner serves as the State Cartographer. The State Land Commissioner delegates responsibility to the Deputy State Cartographer/Senior GIS Analyst for managing Statewide GIS activities and working with a wide variety of organizations from different sectors including state agencies, local governments, Federal Agencies, and private organizations. Under the guidance of the agency CIO, the incumbent also manages and supports the Arizona Geographic Information Council (AGIC) along with its workgroups, and committees. AGIC brings GIS professionals together from Federal, State, and local agencies to collaborate on data, best practices, initiatives, and more. The Deputy State Cartographer represents Arizona at the National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC). Under the guidance of the agency’s Information Section and Resource Analysis Division (IS/RAD) Director, this Deputy State Cartographer / Senior GIS Analyst position will fulfill the role of the State Cartographer.
The Deputy State Cartographer will also support related critical GIS activities of ASLD. These include, but are not limited to, creating cartographic products, training users, designing applications, obtaining and processing data, analyzing spatial data, serving as the point of contact for State level GIS support, overseeing and administering AZGeo, the statewide geospatial clearinghouse, and creating agreements to secure funding to support AGIC and AZGeo.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
