We are currently seeking a Cartographic Technician to join our team in supporting a government client, creating high-quality maps and data products that contribute to national initiatives.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for acquiring, processing, and managing spatial data, assisting in automated cartographic design, and supporting the production of both digital and print maps for various critical uses. You’ll collaborate with experts, leverage your ESRI and Python skills, and navigate complex data sources to deliver accurate cartographic outputs.

Responsibilities:

  • Spatial Data Management: Acquire, compile, process, convert, update, edit, and attribute spatial data files. Utilize technology to gather digital files and documentation from various online sources.
  • Cartographic Design: Assist in automated cartographic design, compilation, and construction of intermediate-scale national maps, thematic maps, illustrations, and graphics for both digital and print production.
  • Python Script Assistance: Define requirements for Python scripts to process digital data files, assign line weights, polygon shades, and place annotations for plotting purposes, ensuring precision in map production.
  • Data Management Support: Collaborate with the Data Management group to maintain a comprehensive digital database and metadata, ensuring data integrity and proper documentation.
  • Complex Map Production: Assist in the research, collection, and collation of data from various cartographic sources, including survey notes and field notes, to help design and execute complex multi-sheet maps, often requiring non-standard methodologies.
  • Database Integrity & Maintenance: Edit and maintain the cartographic database, ensuring data input procedures are followed and creating complex data analysis and retrieval methods.
  • Documentation Production: Assist in producing additional documentation as required for the map production process.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Traditional Cartography: Proficiency with ESRI tools for cartographic production and mapping.
  • Python Programming: Experience with scripting and automation in Python for map production and data processing.
  • Government Experience: Previous experience supporting scientific programs, particularly in earth sciences and government-related work, is highly preferred.
  • Geospatial Expertise: Experience in managing and editing geospatial data, particularly in the context of topographic, geological, or other earth sciences.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in IT, GeoSciences, or a relevant field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in a cartographic or geospatial data-related role.
  • Security: Must be able to pass basic NACI, background, drug, and reference checks.
  • Location: U.S. Remote
